An Oil Spill Lawyer Can Help You Get Compensation

April 20th 2010 is a day that will not be forgotten too soon by thousand of people who were the victims of the ecological disaster that stack up to be one of the most disastrous events in the history of oil spilling. If you are someone who has been affected by this, then you will be able to get compensated for all the damage that has been done to you. But still, there are many people that, even though were promised to be helped by BP, they have not received any help and thus are still waiting for something to happen and get their compensations which they deserve.
So yes, the only chance that these people will have in order to get their compensations, would be to have BP sued. But in this time of economical crisis and in the situation that these people are in, money is something that is hard to come by and there will be thousand of people who will not have the financial power to hire a lawyer and sue the British Petroleum. Thus, if you will not have enough money for this, then your best bet would be to find a lawyer who will be willing to work on a contingency basis.
Yes, there will be many judges that will charge BP for the damage that they have caused, but there is no guarantee for that though. Even though the company has stacked around twenty billion dollars for this operation, the ones who have been affected by the spill will not have an easy time getting their share from that sum of money.
So yes, even if the company has admitted the fact that it is responsible for everything that has happened, the lawyers that it will employ will make sure that the ones who have been suffering from the damages, will only get the minimum pays.
There will certainly be scenarios in which those who were the ones that suffered from the oil spill will be greatly disadvantaged. If litigation will be the method to employed, it will definitely take a long time and could take many years to be heard in court. Resolving it will also take probably even more than that. The harsh reality is that the victims who are suffering need the money right now, not after a few years.
If you are someone who is involved into this situation and can afford a lawyer, make sure to discuss everything you need to know with him about your problem. The oil spill lawyer will definitely help you out big time.

Miami Tourism: Plain Sailing or Troubled Water Since the BP Oil Spill?

By Mike Leverency
Miami beach is one of the most recognisable locations in the world, after the BP Oil Spill will the beach be a white heaven or a black hell? Here's a quick timeline of the oil spill to put some of it into perspective:
20th April: The Oil Rig, Deep Water Horizon reports an explosion and fire, eleven people are missing and 17 injured
22nd April: The Deep water Horizon sinks in 5,000ft of water. There are reports of a five mile ling oil slick
25th April: The underwater well is leaking at 1,000 barrels of oil a day.
28th April: The Coastguard announces that the flow of oil is at 5,000 barrels per day, five times larger than first estimated. Controlled burns begin.
29th April: President Obama gives his first public speech about the spill, pledging that he will spare no resource to stop the spill.
1st May: The coastguard announce that the spill will affect the coast.
13th May: A researcher from Purdue University puts the amount of oil leaking at 70,000 barrels per day.
15th June: President Obama says that the Oil Spill is the worst environmental disaster America has ever faced
19th September: BP finally stops the ruptured well from leaking.
It's been a tragic summer for the Gulf of Mexico, with the President saying that the Oil Spill is the worst environmental disaster in U.S history.
As you can see from the timeline above, the Oil Spill did hit the coast of the US, and our TV screens were filled with reports of tar and oil balls washing up onto the shores. The big question is whether this disaster is going to affect tourism? We know that it affected the fishing trade as the fishing boats were banned from the spill sight. It has also had some lasting environmental damage, with a species of seahorse almost going extinct as a result.
After the spill had stopped the reports of the little black tar balls disappeared from our TV's but the question still remains that whether this disaster will affect tourism to one of America's tourism hotspots.
We have already seen political representative's promoting Florida's and Alabama's beaches. Barrack Obama was photographed swimming with his daughter, and more recently Governor Charlie Crist has been photographed promoting Miami's South Beach.
Tourism figures are looking healthy, but only time will tell. The Tourism board can do nothing apart from parade officials along beaches to try and transmit a positive image. It is hard to tell which way the tourists will swing on this one, keep an eye out because there may be very cheap flights to Miami in the coming months.
But Florida isn't just about the beaches, there are plenty of activities and things to see and do around the Gulf. By all accounts the beach is fine, but, if the beaches aren't fine, will that affect Tourism in a negative way? Or will tourists just avoid the beach?
I'm Mike, I want to educate, help and inspire people to think about travel.

Oil Spill Rants and Raves and Where Are the Oil Spill Jobs?

By Joy Schardt-Smith

Every time I see the news I am shocked at how few boats and people are in and around the coastlines cleaning up the oil. We know PB has the money to hire people. Why aren't they hiring people all along the coast to clean up the oil? In a few photos we see workers, but in many more photos we see no one except for a reporter and a handful of people looking on with sadness and helplessness at the situation.
Where are the boats that skim up the oil? What are BP and the President waiting for? Granted everyone was busy trying to figure out a way to stop the oil leaking, but why have they done so little to clean up the oil that has already leaked? Can they only think of one thing at a time? I would have thought while BP was thinking about how to stop the leak, they would have hired people to start clean up immediately. Granted it is an overwhelming task, but the longer they wait to do this on a massive scale the worse it all becomes. The more death to animals, sea creatures and birds the sadder this whole situation becomes.
I live on the East Coast of Florida and fortunately the oil has not appeared here to my knowledge. The economy is going to be hit on the West coast of Florida and in the Pan Handle which will ultimately affect all of Florida to some extent. Unemployment is already high enough here in Florida. The housing market is already in shambles. I can't even imagine how terribly angry and upset the residence in the states closer to the spill feel.
If nothing else BP should be hiring massive people from these areas to work on the clean up efforts. There should be no unemployment at least temporarily in LA.
People need to demand more from both BP and our President. People in other states, unaffected by the oil spill need to get involved. How do we make our voices heard?

Spill Absorbents Uses and Tips

By Travis Zdrazil
Spill absorbents are your first aid to oil spills. Just like you have band aids and cotton balls in your first aid kit, spill absorbents are your immediate solution for oil spills. These are valuable safety tools that can save you from paying fines and damages.
Spill absorbents are made with fibers to absorb and contain the oil spill. There are 2 basic types of spill absorbents. These are oil spill absorbent booms or socks and oil spill absorbent pads. They complement each other. Once the boom has contained the oil spill, the pads makes it faster to absorb the oil spill. These spill absorbents are both essential in addressing large oil spill accidents.
Absorbent Booms
In terms of first aid kit, booms are like your band aids. Oil spill absorbent booms have both containing and absorbent qualities. But it is primarily used as a tool to contain the oil spill in a specific area. Basically, it stops the oil from spreading by forming a barrier around the oil spill. Booms can be linked together. These chains are made up of sections of single booms that are available with a diameter of 5" to 8" and in lengths from 10 feet to 20 feet. It is commonly connected by carbon metal hooks. The tubular shape makes it possible to cover larger areas than absorbent pads individually. Their bright white finish makes it easier to determine if they need replacement. In large water areas, it is usually held together by two vessels to form an enclosure. On land areas, they can be placed around the contaminated area. It serves like a wall to prevent the oil from leaking further.
How to use oil absorbent booms:
1) Scan the affected area and determine how many sections you are going to need.
2) Connect together the number of sections needed.
3) Place the booms in the water.
4) Enclose the oil spill.
a. In waters, let it float around the edge of the oil spill.
b. On land, contain the oil spill from reaching drainage, holes, and most important any body of water.
Absorbent Pads:
They act like cotton as a first aid measure. They absorb the oil from the environment upon contact. The absorbency of the pads makes it great choice for the cleanup of oil spill. There are varieties of absorbent pads in terms of purposes. Different pads are designed to target specific types of contaminants. You must choose from pads that are made to be used for water based spills. They are generally white and will not sink in water. They repel water and absorb hydrocarbons only. Some absorbent pads are constructed to have anti-static qualities that prevent sparks to ignite a fire. There are also some absorbent pads which are designed to provide protection for the user. These last two types of pads are more convenient to use around small spills and not on spills on large bodies of water.
How to use oil absorbent pads:
1) Scatter the absorbent pads on the spill after the booms are in place to contain it.
2) Make sure to cover as much surface area as possible.
3) Remove heavily saturated absorbent pads, on water usually long handle hooks are used.
4) Replace the saturated pads with new absorbent pads as needed.
5) Continue this process until it completely absorb the oil spill.
Be sure to dispose of all absorbent material based upon Federal, State and local regulations.

The Reason For the Oil Spill

By M. R. Anderson
We are entering the Age of Aquarius. What is the Age of Aquarius? I believe it is a new beginning. The 6000 year rule of evil, selfishness, hatred, fear, sorrow and especially greed is coming to an end. The elite rulers know this and they will do any and everything possible to prolong their grip on the masses.
These evil people have secret knowledge that most are unaware of. They know how to use the law of attraction to get what they want and they also know the consciousness of water. The oil spill disaster was not an accident.
This world is governed by universal law and divine order. Water has a conscious just like everything else in the universe. The earth is 75% water, so when the collective consciousness of the people slowly shift to vibrations on love, peace and harmony, the water of the earth carries out this consciousness to all living things faster.
Have you ever heard of the Japanese word Hado? Hado is the intrinsic vibrational pattern at the atomic level in all matter, the smallest unit of energy. Its basis is the energy of human consciousness.
Dr. Emoto found out that water has a conscious when he took pure clean water and spoke to the water and showed gratitude to the water. Dr. Emoto observed that when the water was frozen, beautiful crystal patterns appeared. When words and symbols of gratitude were placed on containers holding the water, the beautiful crystal patterns appeared again. Distance did not affect the water also. The opposite was also true. When negative words were spoken or negative symbols were shown to the water, distorted and deformed crystal patterns appeared. Water that was prayed over also formed beautiful patterns. According to Dr. Emoto's work, words and symbols of gratitude formed the most beautiful crystal patterns.
I believe that the earth and the universe is entering an era that will be filled with peace and love. You can see this happening now. People are noticing the negativity on the television and are not interested in watching it any longer. Children do not want to hear the negative music or see negative movies any longer. There are more and more public speakers out there who are getting the word out about how lovely life is. People are walking in the park, having cookouts, and speaking to their neighbors and complete strangers more than ever. People are more concerned about their health. People are also getting away from the warlike and fear based mentality. Physical life is much too short and people are realizing this fact.
The disaster in the gulf with the oil spill is a desperate attempt to change the consciousness of the water and to change the consciousness of the masses. Whatever "they" try to do will not work. "Their" time is coming to an end. The kingdom of heaven is within and the devil is a collection of evil men, deeds and thought currents that are not in harmony with The Great Creator or God. There is no man in the center of the earth with horns on his head. Think good thoughts and thank your water and be thankful for everything that you have. Pray for a solution to the oil spill in the gulf.

BP Oil Spill a Back to School Nightmare

As the new school year approaches a new nightmare is unfolding due to the BP oil spill. The students who are going back to school in the region will be adversely affected. There are parents and children who have been displaced due to the loss of their income. Parents have been forced to move out of their homes and school districts due to a loose of income. The impact on children is devastating when parents must continually move to survive. Students are withdrawing from school with little notice. A child who is already far behind will lose hope that they can ever catch up.
School District superintendents and principals need to be vigilant about this issue. Too many lives are at risk and the number of students in this situation is growing. During the fall each time a new student comes into a school another student will be leaving due to issues related to the BP Oil spill. BP needs to invest its time and energy in stabilizing families to alleviate the potential harm to children. An unstable family increases the likelihood that a child is not sufficiently educated.
Students who are in their senior year of high school will suffer too. If they do not know where they will be living it will make finishing high school difficult. It could also make them leave a high school that was their home for three or four years. If a student moves far away their plans to attend college may also be affected. The senior year for the typical high school student can be stressful but the BP oils spill adds a new element.
The BP oil spill is an early warning sign concerning the environment and economic issues we must face. Our country is in need of innovative students who can develop solutions for these disasters. In an industry that is so wealthy it's hard to imagine that there would not be safety procedures to prevent the type of accident that we have witnessed. Companies need to invest more in colleges that can do research and offer solutions in the time of crisis. They should invest in bright young minds.
The warning signs have been all around us but we have ignored them. Science teachers have been teaching our children that we are too dependent on oil while they are in K12 schools but nothing has dramatically changed. Students go off to college then the graduate and purchase inefficient cars that consume a lot of gasoline. Keeping this at the forefront of discussions with children will keep it on their minds when they become corporate executives. In the next decade we should see a rise in the number of solar panels, wind mills and alternative energy for cars.
It's important that BP fulfill its obligation to correct all of the problems that they have caused. When you have more than 19,000 gallons of oil for a month you have created a catastrophic problem. It will take some families substantial time to recover their lost income. Workers who are in the fishing industry and oil industry have children who need an education too. Perhaps this is the time to emphasize the value of education and to produce the future generation of engineers and scientists who can prevent another oil accident. Let's send students back to school with enthusiasm for learning and creating the future.

Gulf Oil Spill & Accounting - Keep Your Business Safe With the Oil Spill

By Judy Driscoll
The Gulf Oil Spill has effected the local economy in more ways than one including: Less people booking vacations in the coming and future weeks, fear from small business owners from decrease in travel, and damages to the environment. The below article is going to outline ways to keep your small business safe in these tough times.
Things to do keep your business a float in the oil spill.
1) Be prepared for a decrease in business from the oil spill. Have workers on notice or try to staff part time help that can be easily told to go home if changes in business occur.
2) Try to build cash reserves to allow for at least a 6 month emergency fund based on your business operating at 50% capacity.
3) Offer discounts if visitors pre-pay to help reduce cancellations.
4) Offer rebates and incentives to encourage clients to book stays in the future with the oil concerns.
5) Be ready if you are not in the tourism business for these effects to trickle down.
The Florida tourism market is a multi billion dollar business and is the life blood of the Florida economy. If you are in the restaurant business you will be directly effected but if you are in another business you will get effected as the spending slows for other industry's. When managing your cash disbursements and auditing your books please allow for extra reserves.
Banks are not lending like they used to in the Tampa Bay area so make sure you address cash flow concerns at least 6 months before you need them.

Employing Smart Oil Clean Up Methods

By Robert MacLaren
Oil spills can cause harm to the environment, resulting in costly fines, and create dangerous slip and fall hazards in your facility. It is therefore important that you have the right spill equipment to control and clean up dangerous oil spills and that you use them in the proper way to get the most out of them, doing this will ensure that you are prepared for any oil spills that may occur in your facility and will help to protect both your workers and the environment.
Choosing the right products
Being prepared and employing smart clean up methods for oil spills begins with having the right spill equipment for your facility such as absorbents, spill kits and spill barriers.
There are many different types of absorbents which soak up many different types of liquids. If you are working with oil you should choose oil-only absorbents which will absorb and retain oils or oil-based liquids without absorbing a drop of water. Some oil only absorbents contain as well as absorb oil spillages which is an important first step to take when responding to oil leaks so that they don't have the chance to spread and cause a threat to the environment and employee safety. Absorbent socks and booms prove effective at doing this as they are flexible and mouldable to almost any surface and can be used on both land and water to surround oil leaks. Other products for simply containing oil spills include non-absorbent spill dikes and barriers which form tight seals to surfaces and help to prevent oil spills from spreading. Containing spills using these products will ensure that the area to clean up is much smaller and the oil spill will be easier to manage.
After containing oil leaks the next step is clean up. Oil-only spill kits provide a complete solution for containing and cleaning up dangerous oil spills as they contain oil-only absorbent socks, pillows and mats as well as accessories to help you dispose of used absorbents safely. Once a spill has been controlled, oil-only mats, typically available in light, medium and heavy weight versions, and pillows should be used in conjunction with absorbent socks, booms or spill barriers to completely and clean up the spill.
Smart ways to use oil spill products
Once you have chosen the right products it is important that you use them correctly and to their full potential. There are a number of smart ways and situations in which to do this:
  • You should always make sure all absorbents have direct contact with the surface and the oil by clearing all loose absorbents and debris from the surface surrounding the spill
  • Different weights of absorbent mats such as light, medium and heavy weight should be used in different spill situations. Use light weight mats when you have a thin spill over a large surface area, medium weight for general everyday oil spills and heavy weight when you have large spills that need cleaned up quickly.
  • Absorbent pillows should be used in situations where the oil spill is deeper and you need to absorb a lot more oil.
  • Use absorbent socks for absorbing leaks in difficult places such as machines bases, ledges and along drip pans as well as containing and absorbing liquid spills on floors. If you are using multiple absorbent socks and booms to surround oil spills on floors or water, the smart way is to overlap them when placing them end-to-end to ensure liquid doesn't pass through.
  • Non absorbent barriers and dikes should be used when you are looking for a durable spill containment product and if you want to recover the oil that has spilled rather than absorb it.
  • Place oil-only spill kits in every spill prone area in your facility so that absorbents are close to hand and fast effective response can be achieved.
Employing these smart clean up methods and choosing the right products will ensure that you can deal with dangerous oil spills in the best possible way.

Oil Spill in the Gulf - A Project Manager's Worst Nightmare Or Time to Shine?

By Brian Rabon
Don't get me wrong, the oil spill in the Gulf is one of the worst disasters our country has seen since hurricane Katrina (Especially since Seagrove Beach on Highway 30-A is one of my favorite places in the world). However, I have to wonder what I would thinking if I was the project manager assigned to digging that well. Hopefully with such a high dollar project, risk mitigation would have been at the forefront of my mind. I must have had the thought of "The well could explode, killing everyone, and creating a monumental contamination problem; thus causing loss of life, costing millions--- if not billions--- and damaging our companies reputation beyond belief" on my risk register. Or maybe I didn't, maybe this was one of those unknown-of-unknowns that is the reason we set aside a management reserve. Though, I seriously doubt the customary ten percent is going to cover it this time.
So hindsight is 20/20 and the point is not whether I could have predicted this situation and put an appropriate mitigation strategy in place. But what if I were the person responsible for working on this team in the Gulf and this disaster happened all of a sudden? I would now have one of the largest scope additions ever. How would I proceed? Well, when you are losing two hundred thousand gallons of oil a day you have to act fast. I would probably want to establish a command center where I could have joint operations with various government agencies, industry partners, and volunteers (staffed around the clock). With such a complicated problem to solve I would immediately need to identify the world's leading experts and get them on my team, the human resource plan would be very important. Another key aspect of planning for this situation would be an amazing communications plan. The coordination amongst such a large team alone would be mind boggling, but the need to get information to the public about our progress would be essential.
What would you do if you were the project manager in this situation? Would you rise to the occasion and do all that you could to help the situation? Would you give up, change your name, get plastic surgery, and move to another country? Let's hope that we never find ourselves in this type of situation.
Seriously I wish the best to all of those involved in the cleanup effort. I hope that they can act fast and apply strong project management in order to minimize the impact to our precious environment.

Oil Spill Cleanup Jobs

By Ruth Caldon
The Gulf oil spill has affected the local fishing market, the tourism industry and has resulted in a major number of people going out of work. Nearly 423 miles of the shoreline across the Gulf of Mexico is being affected by the 100,000 barrels of petroleum oil that gushes out of broken pipes each day. The petroleum companies that are responsible for this ongoing disaster are hiring people to help in cleaning up the oil mess by providing oil spill cleanup jobs to the masses. Many NGOs and other voluntary organisations have taken up the cleanup drive along the shoreline.
Most people seem to have found a new way to get income and do their bit for the environment by applying for the oil spill cleanup jobs. In coastal Louisiana, this has created a mini job boom with many agencies hiring people to help clean the oil mess. The petroleum company, BP, is also taking in applications for different positions to oil spill cleanup jobs.
When there is an oil spill, the oil is washed ashore and affects the coastline. A quick effort is required to avoid the oil from mixing with the sediment on the shoreline. Different cleanup methods that are undertaken include using barriers to herd the oil spill away from shorelines, pressure washing, manual cleaning efforts, removal of oil debris, sedimentation, and many others. These cleanup jobs are open for all and most of them do not require any dedicated skill sets. Different types of work, like cleaning up the oil spill on the shore, relocating and taking care of wildlife affected by the oil spill, offshore work, etc. are available. Some of the other positions that are being offered are technicians, chemists, engineers, labourers, environmental specialists, health workers, project heads, and general cleanup workers.
There are many websites where you can apply for shore protection and oil spill cleanup jobs. Once you register on these sites, you will be notified on the different jobs that are open in your county by e mail or phone. You may choose the one best suited for you. Most of these jobs are being coordinated by Risk Management Disaster Services, a contractor who specialises in cleanup and recovery services. Other companies also hire people for the same. You may apply as either as an individual or as a contractor.
If you sign up as an individual, you may have to undergo training for the oil spill cleanup jobs. The training may last up to 40 hours wherein you will educated on oil spill basics, what you are required to do and your skills will be analysed before you are placed, to ensure that you are up for the job.

Ill Effects of Oil Spill on Sea Life

By Amelia Sherman
Oil spills are one of the number of prominent environmental issues that have been troubling environmental fanatics across the globe. These oil spills have a disastrous effect on the environment. Nevertheless, it is the sea animals that are the worst hit. Oil spills have numerous ill effects on sea birds and animals. Let us look at a few of the damaging effects they have on marine life.
1 of the most prevalent side effects of an oil spill is hypothermia. This is a illness often endured by marine creatures which have been exposed to it. Once the oil drifts into the water, it creates a sticky substance called the 'mousse'. This mousse gets stuck simply to the fur or feather of sea animals. The fur and feathers that are typically constructed up of air space to aid insulation are unable to do this as a outcome of the oil coat, leading to hypothermia. This illness could also eventually result in death for many marine animals.
Marine creatures have no choice but to consume the diseased water for their survival. Consumption of such oil laden water paves way to a number of health troubles such as damage of internal organs, poisoning and the like. Sometimes the harm may exaggerate to the degree of annihilation of red blood cells, bad immune system, damage of kidney, liver and plenty of more.
The oil vapors are also widely known to be intensely dangerous for the eyes and lungs. The damage is even more exaggerated in case more oil spills to the water and the oil vapor starts to evaporate. Sometimes, these vapors also cause many marine animals to feel unnaturally sleepy or drowsy.
Many sea animals die as a result of ingestion of oil. But, there are a handful of that become prey to predators as a consequence of a weakened method. Trapped in oil, the fur and feathers boost the body weight of marine creatures. This makes it tough for the birds as well as the animals. As a result, they are unable to save themselves and are trapped by predators.
Oil spills may additionally negatively affect the reproductive abilities of marine organisms. This is specifically correct for sea creatures such as fish and sea turtles. Eating water that's laced with oil on a usual basis may interrupt the reproductive hormones of their body. As a consequence, their potential to reproduce is noticeably reduced.
Thus, given the many negative affects that it has on sea life, every care must be taken to stop oil spills from contaminating our water bodies. If it is allowed to continue unchecked, the extinction of all marine biology is simply unavoidable.

Oil Sorbent Pads - A Low Cost Yet Highly Effective Solution for Cleaning Up Small Oil Spills Fast

By Travis Zdrazil
Oil spills can be really messy. And you have to act fast if you want to prevent the problem from spreading. Fortunately, there's an easy and low-cost solution to cleaning things up fast: oil sorbent pads.
Of course cleaning up oil spills is actually a two-step process, depending on how big of a spill it is. If it's just a small leak, oil sorbent pads can mop it up within minutes.
The key for making this possible is to have them handy right then and there. And that's where pads really shine! They're so cheap and handy that it is possible to have a small stash of them just about anywhere where oil is handled.
This means that it's easy to just grab one of those oil sorbent pads and soak up the errant oil before it can go anywhere. How much easier could that be.
If the spill is a bit bigger, though, you will need something else. That's when the two-step approach to cleaning up oil spill messes comes in: first, a spill must be contained and THEN it needs to be cleaned up.
If you need something to contain a spill, you'll find spill berms are just the ticket. They're handy and, depending on what kind you get, they don't take up too much space.
So if you have areas where bigger oil spills are an issue, just keep some spill berms handy, and arrange them around the spill so that the oil can't go anywhere. Only then it's time to take out the oil sorbent pads or other absorbents and mop away.
All of the above applies to spills in a facility or on land. If the spill is in a body of water, you may need oil booms instead of the spill berms, and, depending on the amount of oil, more oil booms to soak up the oil.
However, if it's a small spill on a body of water, pads can actually take care of that as well -- they're perfect for skimming oil off water.
Here's a bonus: oil sorbent pads can easily be reused. All you need is a hand wringer and you can simply wring them, collect the oil, and put them to use again -- over and over. This means, you can clean up an oil spill with just a few of those pads -- which makes them even more economical than they already are.

Response to Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill of 2010

By Terry Swejkoski

We are now seeing the devastating consequences of drilling for oil in the Gulf. Risk management obviously failed to its job in protecting our natural resources. We continue to see the actual cost of allowing oil companies to tap our nature resources in the Gulf. Drilling for oil in an environment that is conducive to catastrophic failure when something goes wrong is simply too risky to continue.
BP should have had Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) studies in place before the first barrel of oil was pumped from the Gulf. You can bet they knew the risks we far greater working at depths where it is simply impossible to manage mechanical challenges when they arise. Of course, those risks probably were worth the profit margin in the eyes of BP executives. Guaranteed safe guards and proof of those guarantees should have been mandated by our government prior to allowing drilling. Why do we continue to allow big business to set their own standards, and then, allow the fox to watch over the chicken coop?
President Obama sent to Congress last week a legislative package meant to speed up assistance to those affected by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.
Here's a brief overview from White House "Fact Sheet" of the topics that legislative package contains:
A ROBUST RESPONSE
Immediate Funding
Food Safety
Monitoring and Improving Off Shore Oil Exploration
Environmental Studies
ASSISTANCE TO AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS AND BUSINESSES
Oil Spill Unemployment Assistance
Nutrition Assistance
Employment Assistance
One-Stop Assistance
HELP FOR COMMUNITIES
Economic Recovery
Fisheries Disaster
SBA Loans
PROTECTING TAXPAYERS AND HOLDING OIL COMPANIES RESPONSIBLE
Ensuring BP is Compensating People Affected by the Spill
Raising the Liability Caps
Increasing the Excise Tax that Funds the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund
Promoting Program Integrity and Ensuring Aid Dollars Are Spent Well
Perhaps now we will finally realize that the risk of drilling in our wetlands is far greater than the benefits or profit margins available to the huge corporations controlling the drilling. It's time to find a better way folks...time for a change in how companies do business at the cost of the general population's burden. The ripple consequences of this catastrophic event will be seen for many years to come...that you can count on.
If we continue to rely strictly on fossil fuels to support our current needs our next generations will continue to suffer the consequences such as those caused by the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. In the short-run it may be more expensive to drill for oil on land, however, in the long-run the total cost to everyone is considerably higher.

The Reason For the Oil Spill

By M. R. Anderson Platinum Quality Author
